Nowadays the design of wineries by prestigious architects seems a trend. But Protros facilities mark a turning point in the mastering of architectural techniques applied to functional spaces. They are not just nice environments to complete daily tasks in the winery; these spaces are truly an art work. For example, the barrel storage room -which will house about 10,000 barrels-, turns space in luxury and strictness in which embellishments have no place. Polished concrete, glass and wood are the main materials used in the construction of this complex by the prestigious team of Architects Rogers Strik Harbour + Partners, led by the genius English Architect Richard Rogers.
Protos’ 2008 harvest took place in the new facilities, where 36 millions of Euros were invested in order to add space to the barrel storage room, the bottling room...and to continue making high-end wines. Yet the main reason behind the construction of this magnificent complex is to increase quality, Protos true obsession. And for many years now, Protos has developed ambitious R&D&I programmes. “A unique R+D+I
program for quality assurance”
In terms of viticulture, Protos has developed a plan to characterize
the vineyards its suppliers have, which consists in specifying each
and every special feature. Regarding oenology, Protos is focused
on applying new analytical methods that function by infrared rays
to set the quality of grapes on arrival at the cellar. In addition,
its R+D+I Department is working on classifying barrels according
to the different wine-ageing parameters. Protos, faithful to its
decision to remain in the vanguard of the best world wines, is committed
to innovation. Wine-related tourism will be a new business opportunity for Protos upon opening the new winery. Remarkably, the building designed by the English Lord will attract many visitors who will have the opportunity to enjoy guided visits and hold events and business meetings in the original spaces of this architectonic jewel which, along with the Peñafiel Castle, will become the flagship of this Valladolid town. |
